The Fire, The Water, and Maudie McGinn by Sally J. Pla

Let’s talk about this phenomenal book! It’s a children’s novel geared for ages 10 and up. It is written in 1st person form the point of view of a 13 year old girl who is autistic. It takes you through her daily experiences, how she handles them and her emotions.

Adults should never ask children to keep secrets.

Maudie has a scary secret and it’s a burden she carries when she goes to visit her dad for the summer.

A wildfire forces Maudie and her dad from his cabin, and they flee to a little beach town, his hometown.

Maudie is autistic and this sudden change upends her world. Her dad makes her feel safe and she slowly finds the confidence to explore new things, make new friends. She is treading new waters and doesn’t want to go back to her mother. She needs to find a way to stay with her dad. Will that involve spilling her big secret, and reveal the truth before summer is over?

This is a brilliant book! It is told through Maudie’s perspective. It is so good! It goes through her everyday experiences, how she deals with her challenges and it’s compelling and heartwarming!

This is a children’s book but I recommend it for all ages! Excellent story! 5/5⭐
